about the album

After 11 years as a professional pianist, 35-year old Mattias Nilsson releases his debut album, the solo album Dreams of Belonging. The recording is a solo work that features eight Swedish folk songs, hymns, more modern pieces and three original Nilsson compositions, plus a ‘classic’ John Hartford cover. The album represents the culmination of a long journey for Nilsson, and the discovery of an individual voice, combined with a deep-seated love for the music of his homeland. It is also the most difficult of configurations for a piano player: solo, alone in front of his instrument.

about the album

This is the first release from the international duo of Austrian saxophonist Ray Aichinger and Swedish pianist Mattias Nilsson, a six-track Christmas-inspired EP with melodies from mostly Europe called Silent Nights. The recording was made after a series of performances around Europe in the same year, spanning Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Jazz Flashes writes: "It's a very interesting collection because it couples two standards with a few carols from the European tradition that show how rewarding the relationship between the folk music of the Old World and jazz can be...echoes the style of Lester Young and Ben Webster, and an unlikely recasting of ‘In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning’ as a Yuletide song.
